As a project subsidized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, this project is developing a logistics network to realize door-to-door, temperature-controlled small-lot transportation from Japan to overseas restaurants within 14 days using temperature-controlled air freight to countries around the world. At the sake tasting, the most popular products were those with limited quantities, which were difficult to transport in a quality-assured and timely manner, and those with small production quantities, which are difficult to export in bulk under the usual scheme.

\r\n\r\nWhile sake exports have reached a record high for 12 consecutive years, only major sake breweries have been able to export sake successfully, and many small- and medium-sized sake breweries do not have the resources or know-how to do so on their own, and are struggling to develop overseas sales channels as the domestic market shrinks.

\r\n\r\nTherefore, Standage has launched an initiative (hereafter, \"the initiative\") to export sake through Standage's cross-border e-commerce site \"YUKARI\" targeting restaurants in Europe and the U.S., starting in the spring of 2023.

\r\n\r\nAs a project subsidized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, this initiative is building a logistics network that enables door-to-door transportation of small lots from Japan to overseas restaurants within 14 days using temperature-controlled air freight to countries around the world. This has made it possible to handle unpasteurized sake, etc., for which quality control during transportation and timely export had been difficult in the past.

<\/div>\r\nThe initial focus areas for this initiative are Paris, France, and London, UK, and in May 2023, we held launch events, tastings, and business meetings in both cities with the aim of expanding local recognition and cultivating sales partners.

\r\n\r\nBoth events were free of charge and by invitation only, and were held under the auspices of the local Japanese embassies.

\r\n\r\nMore than 40 people attended the event in Paris and more than 60 people in London, including chefs and sommeliers from restaurants and hotels, media representatives, influencers, and embassy officials.

\r\n\r\nA total of 50 brands from 15 domestic breweries that have announced their participation in this initiative were prepared at the event. With product catalogs distributed on the day in hand, most visitors spent several hours carefully tasting all the brands.

\r\nThe quality control of this initiative is one of its strengths, and it is also a strength of the company, which ensures constant-temperature transportation not only during air transportation, but also during pickup and land delivery, resulting in a particularly strong preference for draft sake and limited-edition sake.

\r\n\r\nIn both cities, a high percentage of visitors were from high unit-price restaurants, which is the target of this initiative.

\r\n\r\nThe ratio of Japanese and non-Japanese food visitors was about 50\/50, indicating a high interest in the combination of Japanese food and sushi as well as Western cuisine such as French food and sake in both cities.

\r\n\r\nThe majority of visitors who purchased sake on the day of the event were from restaurants offering course meals and sake and wine pairing menus at a price of 300\u20ac\/\u00a3 or more per customer.

\r\n\r\nA visitor commented, \"As this is a new distribution network, I had never seen these brands before, and I was very interested in tasting them\" (Paris\/restaurant staff). Another positive comment was, \"Interest in sake is growing in Europe, and local people tend to spend money on good things without hesitation, so I think it is good to target high-end restaurants\" (restaurant staff, London). On the other hand, \"There are many great brands that I would love to do business with, but the overall price is too high for my restaurant. I understand that it is the cost of quality control, but for non-luxury restaurants, it seems difficult to come to terms with the price\" (Paris\/restaurant staff).

\r\n\r\nIn both Paris and London, orders placed on the same day were delivered by door-to-door temperature-controlled small-lot transportation using temperature-controlled airmail.

\r\n\r\nAll orders were successfully delivered within 14 days, as verified by the event, and it was confirmed that there were no quality problems or defects, such as cracks, in the products received.

\r\n\r\nThe event also led to inquiries from outside of Paris and London, and the company is considering implementing a delivery function outside of the cities by the end of the summer.

\r\n\r\nWhile continuing to support sake breweries that are considering exporting, we will further strengthen cooperation with local partners and work to develop new customers and follow up with existing customers in order to increase the number of customers, mainly in Europe.

\r\n\r\nRegarding the new distribution network using temperature-controlled airmail, we will review the flow and system based on our experience this time, and strive to reduce distribution costs, which will lead to a revision of the sales price.
