[Staff Blog] Nigeria x Space Development = National Development?!

【スタッフブログ】ナイジェリア×宇宙開発=国の発展?!

Good evening, this is staff member Mmi (^^)/
Tonight is the best time to see the Orionid meteor shower⭐🌠
I wonder if I can watch it~I hope I can~(*'▽')

Mmi loves the anime "Space Brothers" very much, and last week she suddenly had an overwhelming desire to watch it again, so she started watching it from the beginning again! (Apo is so cute)
If I had watched "Space Brothers" when I was a kid, I might have wanted to become an astronaut... (I'm easily influenced by manga and anime)

"Realize manned space flight by 2030"

In 2016, Nigeria’s Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Onuh (now former Minister of Science and Technology), declared:

Did you know that space development projects are also being carried out in Nigeria?

In fact, I think many people don't have an image of space in Nigeria.
However, like most developed countries, Nigeria has a developed space program, and its National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has successfully launched five satellites since 2003, three of which are still in orbit.

Data from satellites is used to analyze meteorological data and support agriculture, to understand the growth status of crops, and to predict the occurrence of famines.
It was also used in operations to free hostages from Boko Haram, an Islamic extremist group that has repeatedly committed terrorist attacks in Nigeria.

There is still a strong image of poverty in African countries, and in Africa, where many poor people still live, there are of course voices that consider space development a "luxury."

However, the need for satellites as a means to solve social problems such as poverty is emphasized.
The spread of mobile phones is accelerating in Nigeria and other African countries, and new financial services such as Kenya's M-Pesa, which allow people to transfer money without having a bank account, are emerging.
As mentioned above, space development is also being used for agricultural support and conflict resolution, and it is contributing to the resolution of social problems and development in Africa.

"Resolving social issues through technology"

DiGiTRAD, the project we at Standage are working on, will continue to work hard to help solve logistics and international payment issues in Nigeria and other African countries, and eventually become a part of Africa's trade infrastructure!
