[Staff Blog] Nanakusa Day and the Rice Situation in Nigeria🌾

【スタッフブログ】七草の日とナイジェリアのお米事情🌾

Happy New Year 🎍
I'm Mmi, a staff member (^^)/

How did you all spend the New Year holidays?
Due to the ongoing self-restraint measures imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have likely spent the New Year holidays at home more than usual.

We already have New Year's dishes, zoni, mochi, ramen, curry, etc. to refresh our minds...
I take in too many calories during the New Year holidays (._.)

If you stay at home and don't go out, you end up overeating.
Mmi is no exception and is feeling bloated after eating too much rice cakes and zenzai.

And today, January 7th, is Nanakusa Day!
Have you tried the Nanakusa-gayu rice porridge🍃, which is gentle on your tired stomach?
Of course, porridge is delicious when you have a cold or whenever you want to eat it.

Rice is familiar to the Japanese people, but
In fact, Nigeria is the largest rice producing country in Africa! (13th in the world. Japan is 11th. See Global Note statistics for 2019.)

Rice consumption is 6.26 million tons, while production is 3.38 million tons, giving a self-sufficiency rate of 54%! (According to the United States Department of Agriculture in 2019)
In addition, Nigeria is known as a major rice importing country, but the government is working with international organizations to reduce rice imports.
Rice imports fell sharply from 640,000 tons in 2015 to 20,000 tons in 2017.

In Nigeria, the demand for rice is increasing due to changes in eating habits accompanying population growth and urbanization, so it seems likely that rice production and self-sufficiency will continue to increase in the future!

By the way, in Nigeria, a dish called jollof rice, which is made by cooking chicken or beef meat and vegetables in tomato soup and spices, is very popular.
Looks delicious!
(※ I found the recipe on Cookpad! 🍅)
