■Small and medium-sized enterprises are showing increased willingness to export due to shrinking domestic demand and a weaker yen.

As of October 2024, Japan's total population is estimated to be approximately 123.8 million (Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, "Population Estimates"), but it is projected to continue declining and fall below 90 million by 2070 (National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, "Future Population Projections for Japan (2023 Projections)").

In particular, the working-age population (15-64 years old) is declining rapidly, falling below 80 million in 2013 (Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, "Population Estimates").

With the domestic market expected to shrink, and the effects of the weak yen that have continued since around the fall of 2022, developing overseas sales channels has become even more important for Japanese manufacturers.

However, most companies that export are large corporations, and only 13.3% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have overseas operations (*). The ratio of overseas transactions among SMEs remains low. Regional companies, in particular, face challenges in terms of infrastructure and resources, making overseas expansion more difficult compared to urban areas.

Against this backdrop, the national and local governments are also providing various programs and subsidies to support overseas expansion, thereby encouraging small and medium-sized enterprises to expand internationally.
